Dungeon win in retro special: Chris Taylors exceptional genre

The RPG genre is actually popular with video players for decades. Real dursts, as with Adventures or the real-time strategy, there was never here. Thus, over all the years numerous titles and ranks developed into classics and fan favorites. Each player with a tendency to role-playing will certainly have heard something of Diablo, The Elder Scrolls or The Witcher. But there are also the other cases. Games, who also played at their time in the top league, today is gradually forgotten – as Dungeon win. After the third and last part, the series disappeared more and more from the general gamer consciousness. If today is still talking about Dungeon Siege, then mostly associated with the catastrophic bad films of Uwe Boll. On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the first dungeon win, we want to counteract the collective forgotten with this retro special. After all, that was not just some role play. But a serious challenger, who at the beginning of the 2000-kinked Genre-Primus Diablo 2 from the throne.

Overview - First Person RPG Dungeon Crawl FPP Games 1995-1999

The expert was at least pretty impressed when Dungeon was presented victories in the context of the then existing Microsoft House Mass Gamestock. “Treat yourself warm, Diablo!” Tit the PC Games at the time in issue 05/2000. Especially the previously brilliant graphic inspired at the first impression. The fact that the title was awarded great potential in advance, was certainly at Chris Taylor. The games designer was considered an experienced developer who had made a name for a name with a series of sports games and late 90s, especially with the real-time-hit totally annihilation.

Story is second-ranging

Taylor’s goal was to make the game of such a wide target group as only possible accessible. Therefore, the player should not be unnecessarily attributable to more distributing dialogues and story elements. This objective also ensured that the gameplay looks quite simple at first glance. There is no class system. Instead, the equipment determines the development of the character. Anyone who moves into the fight with sword or club is gradually better in melee and builds attributes like strength. With a bow equipped heroes develop to remote fighters and when a character uses a magic book filled with spells, he becomes a wizard. It all happens automatically by Learning by Doing. As soon as the player has decided for a weapon of weapons, he does not have to worry about the character development.

Loading time? What is it?

One factor that probably no longer improves so important, but has made a large part of the fascination 20 years ago, is the graphic of the game. How many titles from the early days of the 3D technology end of the 90s and early 2000s, Dungeon victories are visually very poorly aged. But at that time the graphic representation of the game was considered outstanding. PC Games praised the extremely density, detailed vegetation, the spectacular spell effects and the varied worlds in the test. Forests, ice caves, dungeons, mountains, castles, swamps and canyons made for optical variety and each of these areas was designed with great attention to detail.

In addition to the optical quality, the presentation of the game world but still had a very special technical feature to offer. The game came completely without loading times. You could basically run from the starting point of the campaign to your end through all the different areas of the game, without ever meeting a load screen. Even the entering of buildings and dungeons took place seamlessly. This could only dream of Diablo 2 in two-dimensional geneprimus Diablo 2.

Ten years of success, then was over

The fact that the developers have hit a nerve with their unusual design mix is then shown at the latest in the world’s extremely positive echo of the critics. Many well-known gaming magazines dismissed livestaces, the game’s third-best role-playing game behind Neverwinter Nights and The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind. At the throne of Diablo 2, the game in the end could not shake as much as in advance. Nevertheless, fans got another offshoot of the action role-playing genres, which did not miss his addictive solidity even with the testers of the PC Games.

With more than 1.7 million specimens sold, Dungeon victory was also economically a success. It landed at the end of 2002 in the top 15 of the most sold games of the year. Also in Germany the action role-played great appeal. Five months after Release, the title reached the brand of 100,000 copies sold in German-speaking countries.

The success of Dungeon victories then also led to the development of successors. In 2005, Dungeon appeared victories 2 and a year later with Dungeon Siege: Throne of Agony a separate offshoot for the Playstation Portable. Once again five years later, Dungeon followed victories 3. However, this was developed by Obsidian Entertainment on behalf of Square Enix, which had now bought the rights to the brand of Gas Powered Games. About a fourth part was shortly speculated, as obsidian in 2012 an ominous Project X Anteaserte. But this should eventually develop Pillars of Eternity. And so it has now become quiet for eleven years and the brand dusted in the rights catalog of Square Enix. We hope to have a small contribution to have done so that Dungeon victories are not completely forgotten.
