Hogwarts Legacy wird derzeit genauso stark von den Fans herbeigesehnt wie kritisiert. Sowohl seine Inhalte als auch die Macher des Spiels und des Harry-Potter-Universums sollten hinterfragt werden. Schauen wir uns mal genauer an, warum das Spiel von einigen boykottiert wird. A comment

Grund 1: J.K. Rowling ist transfeindlich

J. K. Rowling, die Autorin der Harry-Potter-Bücher, ist in den vergangenen Monaten und Jahren immer wieder durch transfeindliche Äußerungen auf Twitter aufgefallen. In ihren Tweets geht es oft darum trans Frauen als Gefahren für cis Frauen darzustellen und sie aus feministischen Diskursen auszuschließen. Allgemein spricht sie trans Personen oft ihr Geschlecht ab. Hermine-Darstellerin Emma Watson, Harry-Potter-Schauspieler Daniel Radcliffe und Autoren wie Stephen King stellen sich öffentlich gegen Rowlings Aussagen.

Nun soll zum Weihnachtsgeschäft 2022 Hogwarts Legacy erscheinen. Ein Spiel, auf das Fans schon hinfiebern.

Viele, die sich schon auf das vermeintlichen Rollenspiel-Epos freuen, können J. K. Rowlings persönliche Ansichten ausblenden. Wenn sie die kontroversen Meinungen der Autorin nicht gerade selbst teilen, fällt im Diskurs darüber oft der Begriff „Death of the Author“ – oder zu Deutsch „Tod des Autors“.

Das Konzept beschreibt ein Phänomen, bei dem Intentionen und Gedanken des Autors in Hinblick auf sein Werk keine große Rolle mehr spielen. Wenn dieses nämlich einen bestimmten Status erreicht hat, wiegen Bedeutungen und Interpretationen der Fans schwerer als alles, was der Autor oder die Autorin ursprünglich darin ausdrücken wollte und was seine oder ihre persönlichen Ansichten sind.

Im Bezug auf Harry Potter und Hogwarts Legacy heißt dies: Fans verbinden so viel Positives mit der Marke, dass sie sich das von J. K. Rowlings privaten Meinungen nicht madig machen lassen wollen. Dem Werk und seiner Wirkung wird also mehr Bedeutung zugemessen als der wütenden Autorin.

Dabei gibt es aber einen Haken: J. K. Rowling, und damit ihre diskriminierenden Aussagen, werden durch den Kauf von Hogwarts Legacy finanziell unterstützt. Als Rechteinhaberin verdient die Autorin nämlich an dem Spiel, obwohl sie selbst nicht aktiv beteiligt ist. Entweder direkt durch die Verkäufe oder indirekt dadurch, dass Warner Bros. ihr im Vorfeld eine riesige Summe Geld gezahlt hat.

Aus diesem Grund gibt es auch viele Langzeitfans, die das Spiel boykottieren. Für sie ist der Kauf von Hogwarts Legacy nicht einfach damit zu rechtfertigen, dass sie Lust auf das Harry-Potter-Abenteuer haben. Mit dem Boykott wolle man ein Zeichen setzen, das wichtiger ist als reiner Spielspaß. Oft stammt diese Ansicht aus queeren Kreisen, also von direkt Betroffenen, oder von „Allies“ – also Leuten, die sich für die Gleichberechtigung von LGBTQ-Personen einsetzen.

Von Fanliebe zur Enttäuschung

Auch Phil ist Teil der queeren Community und war jahrelang ein großer Fan von Harry Potter und allem, was mit der Marke zu tun hat. Auf Instagram führte er einen erfolgreichen Fan-Account, der zu seiner Hochzeit über 20.000 Follower hatte. Geld wurde oft in Fanartikel oder Reisen in die Harry Potter Studios investiert.

Im Gespräch erklärt Phil, was ihm Harry Potter bedeutet hat:

„Die Welt von Harry Potter war für mich immer eine Zuflucht. Ich hatte immer das Gefühl, dass J. K. Rowling extrem tolerant ist. (…) Ich dachte immer die Harry-Potter-Welt, die Wizarding World, ist ein Ort, an dem man akzeptiert wird, wie man ist und wo man alles sein kann was man möchte. So kenne ich auch das Fandom.“

Mit Rowlings transfeindlichen Aussagen hatte Phil aber nicht gerechnet. Während er anfängliche, kleinere Kontroversen um die Autorin verteidigte, wurde es irgendwann immer klarer, dass sie es mit ihrer Transfeindlichkeit sehr ernst meint.

„Ich war extrem schockiert, als die Sache mit der Transfeindlichkeit ans Licht kam. Allein durch ihre eigenen Tweets. Ich persönlich habe mich extrem verraten, beziehungsweise im Stich gelassen, gefühlt.“

Um sie finanziell weniger zu unterstützen, hat Phil die Entscheidung getroffen, sich Merchandise und auch Hogwarts Legacy höchstens aus zweiter Hand zu kaufen.

Phil erklärt, dass ihm die Geschichte und die Reihe an sich immer noch viel bedeuten. Nur hinterlässt es bei ihm heute einen bitteren Nachgeschmack daran zu denken, was J. K. Rowling so von sich gibt. Als Teil der LGBTQ-Community wird Phil immerhin öffentlich von der Autorin ins schlechte Licht gerückt, zu der er einst aufgesehen hat.

Dass es viele Harry-Potter-Fans gibt, die Rowlings Transfeindlichkeit ignorieren oder nicht wahrhaben wollen, kann er aus eigenen Erfahrungen nachvollziehen. Anfangs ging es ihm selbst ja nicht anders. Trotzdem hält er es für problematisch, wenn Leute das Thema heute noch unter den Tisch kehren: „Keine Meinung zu äußern ist auch eine Aussage und hat ihre Auswirkungen.“

Reason 2: problematic content

Why should not it interest?

In discussions about the topic it will be imprinted quickly. The site to buy the show the game feels patorm. As if she is banned by the moral apostles or is taken away. The boycott side does not feel belonging and gets the impression that active transfinity is simply tolerated. The debate is so charged to emotions that both sides are more busy to defend their own opinion than that they listen to the other side.

And yet it is a debate that must be guided over and over again. Discrimination must be addressed. Even if Hyped fans would like to banish political topics from their games, this is not always possible. Games are political, as well as their makers. And it is also a political act when you buy a game that has discriminated in indirectly financially rewarded.

At the end of the day, it is a question of priority. What is more important: that you have fun with a game or that discrimination is not supported? It is a question of conscience that everyone has to do with themselves. But it would be nice if the assisted majority of the discriminated minority would listen at least.

When debating around this topic, it is not necessarily about convincing fans to buy the game. It’s about sensitization. It’s about being at least short ** will be aware, whom and what you support buying a game.

Personally, it is important for my values to stand. Sure, as a child I always wanted a Harry Potter game like Hogwarts Legacy. But as an adult I just see what would be associated with my supposed fun – whom I would support with it. I will not buy the game. Not only as an expression of my collected middle finger to rowling, but also as a sign of solidarity. And because both the content as well as the backgrounds to the game have spoiled me any lust.
